If you've ever pulled back a layer of mulch and found rich, dark, crumbly soil underneath, chances are you've got worms to thank. I get asked all the time what makes worm castings so different from regular compost, and honestly, it's one of my favourite questions, because the answer is genuinely fascinating once you understand what's happening at a microscopic level. In this post I'll walk you through what worm castings actually are, why they work so well, and how to start using them in your own patch.
What Exactly Are Worm Castings?
Worm castings are simply worm manure. Worms eat organic matter, like food scraps, manure, or decaying plant material, and what comes out the other end is a fine, odourless, crumbly material packed with plant-available nutrients.
What makes castings special isn't just what goes in, it's what happens during digestion. As organic matter passes through a worm's gut, it gets coated in mucus, broken down by enzymes, and inoculated with billions of beneficial microbes. The result is something far more potent than the raw material you started with.
A good rule of thumb: regular compost feeds your soil, but worm castings feed your soil and recruit an army of microbes to keep working on your behalf long after you've applied them.
Why Worm Castings Work So Well
There are three things going on at once, and it's the combination that makes castings so effective.
Nutrients in a form plants can actually use. Castings contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and a long list of trace minerals, but critically, these nutrients are already in plant-available forms. Your plants don't have to wait for slow breakdown like they do with raw manure.
A thriving microbial population. Each gram of worm castings can contain millions of beneficial bacteria and fungi. These microbes help suppress disease-causing organisms, break down organic matter into nutrients, and build the kind of living soil that doesn't need constant topping up with synthetic inputs.
Improved soil structure. Castings are full of tiny aggregates that improve aeration and water-holding capacity at the same time, which sounds contradictory until you see it in action. Soil drains better after rain, yet holds moisture for longer in our long, dry Australian summers.
How to Use Worm Castings in Your Garden
You really can't overdo worm castings the way you can with synthetic fertiliser, which is one of the things I love about them. A few practical ways to use them:
- Top-dress established plants by sprinkling a couple of centimetres around the base and scratching it lightly into the surface.
- Mix into potting soil at a ratio of around one part castings to four parts potting mix for an instant nutrient and microbe boost.
- Make a casting tea by steeping a cup of castings in a bucket of water overnight, then use it to water seedlings or stressed plants.
- Add to planting holes when putting in new seedlings, tomatoes especially love the boost.
Worth asking yourself: when did you last actually look at what's living in your soil, rather than just what's growing on top of it?
Worm Castings vs Compost — What's the Difference?
People often assume they're the same thing, and while they're cousins, they're not twins. Compost is the product of mixed decomposition by bacteria, fungi, and various critters over weeks or months. Worm castings are the specific output of worms processing material through their digestive system, which concentrates the microbial and nutrient benefits into a much smaller, more potent package.
Think of compost as the broad foundation for your soil, and castings as the high-performance boost you apply where it matters most, around seedlings, in potting mixes, or on plants that are struggling.
Where Worm Castings Come From
Not all worm castings are created equal. Quality depends heavily on what the worms were fed and how the castings were processed afterward. Castings produced from a varied diet of organic material, properly cured and screened, will be far more consistent and nutrient-dense than a rushed, poorly managed batch.

A Couple of Questions I Get Asked Often
Can you use too much? Not really, unlike synthetic fertiliser, castings won't burn roots or leach harmfully into the soil at normal application rates, so it's hard to overdo it through carelessness.
Do they smell? Good quality worm castings should smell earthy, almost sweet, like a forest floor after rain. If something smells sour or off, it hasn't been processed properly.
How long do they last in the soil? The microbial benefits are most active in the first few months, but the structural and organic matter improvements stick around for seasons, especially if you keep topping up annually.
